FROM ST. PAUL’S TO A SPOT OF TEA IN HARROD’S! and more!

Millennium Hotel, South Kensington/London, England
September 23, 2024
Rain, then sun/68F

I love big cities and London with a population of 8.9 million people is BIG.  Today Carol of International Friends (our tour plan)  gave us a great overview of the history of this 2000 year long story from Rome to present time. The Romans settled here, thinking the River Thames was a fishing port, and a great passageway, and it still is, flowing from just west of London to the North Sea, 2oo miles. The Romans left when Christianity arrived, and the Saxons moved in (6th century A.D.)

Two thousand years is a lot of history to take in and for me to write about, so I won’t go too deep with this. I am interested and would have loved to visit Great Britain while I was teaching English Lit!

We passed many landmarks:

Did you know that 4000 people are buried in Westminster Abbey?  We passed by Westminster Abbey, Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, the Strand theater, dragon statues indicating one is leaving or entering London, the city proper, and MORE!

Our first stop was St. Paul’s Cathedral on Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London. Prince Charles and Diana were married there, and over a hundred people are buried there, including Admiral Horatio Nelson and Sir Christopher Wren, the architect.

Second Stop: Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the Guard. We were able to see the Old Guard (soldiers who are currently on duty) relieved by the New Guard, accompanied by a Band and horses ridden by Guardsmen, a very formal handover of duties—but we could not see the actual change because of the crowd.  I never thought I would see this in person!

Next, we had a lunch break near the Tower of London, before we visited this royal fortress. TK and I shared a warm ham and cheese sandwich from Paul’s Bakery.

Jubilee, one of 3 ravens that live in the Tower of London

The Tower of London, built by William the Conqueror to intimidate intruders and show his people that he was in charge.  In the late 1600s , skeletons presumed to be  12-year-old Edward V and 9-year-old Richard, Duke of York—another long story, but their uncle wanted to be King and they were the true heirs.  We saw the Crown Jewels, the real ones!! At least 10 crowns with all the jewels and about 15 more without the jewels –they were removed for other purposes. Amazing!! Nothing matches the tiara that Friend Julie gave me though!!!

We also saw Jubilee, one of the ravens, and the Hall of Kings with their armor and their horses’ armor.  Lots to see!

The River Thames beckoned to us and a boat ride on this storied river was very relaxing, from the Tower of London to the London Eye.  The water is brackish, but “clean,” and along the way we saw the replica of the Globe Theater, the Waterloo bridge built by women during WWII, on time, and under budget. Parliament, Big Ben (Elizabeth’s Tower), London Bridge, the Medieval Bridge, and learned there are a hundred species of fish and a colony of seals in the Thames. How’s that for a sentence I would not want to diagram?

Finally, we enjoyed a spot of tea and scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream at Harrod’s. A formal High Tea—with Wedgwood china, a piano playing in the background, white tablecloth, true elegance.

Harrod's

Cheese section -- Harrod's

After tea we ran around Harrod’s, saw a dinosaur head fossil for sale (for sale, but no price), the Beauty section with open rooms for each individual makeup brand, the Food Hall with a very upscale market (meat, cheeses, bakery, chocolate hall, beef, vegetables, take away food, and more).

I could have spent a lot of time in Harrods, the largest department store I have ever visited, but it was already after 6 p.m. and TK had the “Tube” figured out so we could return to our hotel.

The Tube

Both of us had  18000 steps today. Friend Ann, we can still do it!!!

Aside to Friend Chris H:  I have read 1 3/4 books on the flight over, thanks to you for the books!! I brought 12 or so!

I developed a work around with my photos and the phone photos--and it is time consuming, but we need photos. I cannot edit or really make the best choice, but there will be photos!

Dear Friend Jim, we do have Verizon, but I did not think it would be wise to phone a friend from overseas for advice on this darn issue.  It would take awhile!  Expect a screen shot of his steps soon!

TK’s Takes: The raven was fun to watch, a very deep squawk. TK gravitated to the water, could not get over how big Harrod’s was, and loved the tube, much cheaper than Uber!

LONDON'S FOG AND RAIN DID NOT LAST! WELCOME FALL!

Millennium Hotel

London, England
Sepetmber 22, 2024
Fog, Rain, 70sF

Sorry to vent, but I am beyond frustrated.  Ordinarily I download my photos to my laptop from the SD card, organize them into a file, and then insert them as needed into the blog.  Today, the computer is telling me that the "application cannot be restarted. Try reinstalling the application."   What application??   I cannot even look at the photos. To place the photos hee, I had to insert them directly from the SD card without being able to look at them closely to pick the best ones.  Same laptop, same SD card, same me. It does not help that it has been 31 hours since I have had any sleep.

Back to basics--
Our flights were uneventful and we were picked up right on time by "International Friends" to take us to our hotel.  We left our luggage there and since the room would not be ready for awhile we walked to the closest Starbucks for energy (and bought a London cup).   Our goal today was to visit the Camden Market and after boosting our energy, TK quickly ordered an Uber and off we went to the Market.

Camden Market is very different forom Barcelona's market--there are at least 3 streets with back to back small shops. Hats, clothing, shoes, souvenirs, jewelry, food of every sort-bakeries, Mexican, Indian, Italian, Grilled Cheese...

TK ordering Sunday Roast at Stanhope Arms
I had fish and chips.

We returned to our hotel in the Kensington area (by Uber) and headed for a nearby restaurant.

TK's Takes: They speak English but it is a little off. No washcloths, again. Must be a European thing.

Note to Dear Friend H--Congratulations on being a first time aunt--wonderful news!!

Note to MJ:  I forgot to tell you two weeks ago to mention to Joe that I did watch The Scarlet and the Black on Amazon Prime after we got together--true story about an Irish priest in the Vatican who saved 6500 Jews during WWII --such a good movie!

Thank you, dear Readers for sticking with me--this is a set back and hopefully someone on the ship can help me with this--  I did not need such an issue. No phone call possible to Friend Sue M for help! Or Sons Randy and Brian.

PITTSBURGH AND A BALD EAGLE

Hampton Inn/Pittsburgh Airport
Moon Township, PA
September 20, 2024
Sunny, 80F

Of course it was an easy drive to the hotel for tonight.  With stops at Grove City and Ross Park Mall, we arrived at our Friday destination with few purchases.  Dinner at Primanti Brothers.  Donna from Wisconsin, where were you?? Kept thinking of the year you met us here when your Pittsburgh nephew was getting married.

We are beyond excited for this cruise, the longest yet, with so many great ports to viist, including many we have never visited.

Why am I so tired? Thankfully, our flight doesn't leave till about 1 p.m., so we will have plenty of time in the morning to get ready--I have already repacked the luggage.

For Friend Ann, we are leaving the truck at The Parking Spot at 701 Flaugherty Run Rd, Coraopolis, PA--first time there so will let you know how it is:  https://www.theparkingspot.com

TK's Takes:  While driving, he spotted a beautiful bald eagle in flight quite near us---sending us on our way. Luckily I saw it too. No photos.

Bye, Erie. See you in five weeks!!

CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY IN NIAGARA ON THE LAKE!

September 14-15, 2024

Niagara on the Lake, Ontario / Niagara Falls, Canada
80 F, Sunny

I cannot imagine a more perfect birthday with precious family! The weather was perfect and Denise and Coleen had everything planned. We met at Butler's Bar and Grill for brunch, then walked the charming main street of Niagara on the Lake.  Randy had made reservations for a tour of Konzelmann Estate Winery and by the time we finished there, it was time to take a ride to our Air B&B in Thorold.

Dinner at an interesting street side restaurant on Lundy's Lane, Kelseys. and a walk to the Falls followed.  I am so glad that the illumination of colored lights started at 8 p.m. amd they were beautiful. It must have beem 10 or so years since I had seen the Falls in colors, a great remembrance from childhood too.

I love this photo!!

Beautiful all the way around!

A visit to Sunset Beach on Sunday

We also got a glimpse of nearby Welland Canal

Back in Niagara on the Lake on Sunday--after touring the
historic village again-so much to see, we
enjoyed Birtday Dinner, Irish style!

I could not have had a more perfect weekend!!

TK is doing a good job too!

One week to go!

For Friend Julie:  It is hard to assess how  many cruises we have been on because so many times we double up--stay on the same ship, but do different ports for another week or so. Those are sold as two different cruises, but we don't change staterooms or anything really. So, we  have been on about 63 cruises. Another way to look at it --we have spent 457 days on cruise ships---Princess by far the most times.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

Royal Caribbean
