MYKONOS, GREECE, A WINDY ISLAND!

Friday, October 30, 2026
Day 25/50
Island of Mykonos, Greece
67F, sunny

One of 365 churches on the Island of Mykonos!

Our day in windy Mykonos was quite easy.   Off the ship, we easily found a Sea Bus (5 Euro pp/rt) and we were boating along to Mykonos, the city.  Note: Be sure to disembark on the second stop!

The village of Mykonos from the SeaBus

Mykonos has a permanent population of about 10,704 residents, which can swell to over 50,000 people per day during the peak summer tourist season.  It is part of the Cyclades island group in the Aegean Sea, located between Tinos, Syros, Paros, and Naxos.  It spans 33 square miles.

fire hydrants
The terrain is composed primarily of rocky granite with low elevations and little natural fresh water. Thus, it relies heavily on seawater desalination plants to supply fresh water to residents and visitors. Over 80% of the local workforce works in the travel and service industry.

Considered a party island, Mykonos is world-famous for its vibrant nightlife, luxury resorts, and scenic sandy beaches. We even picked up a few pieces of beach glass on a nearby beach.

The island is also known for iconic whitewashed cubic houses, narrow labyrinth-like cobbled streets, and the picturesque waterfront area known as Little Venice.

We were told there are 365 churches on the island—a lot of churches in 33 square miles.  For comparison, that area is a bit smaller than Disney World (40 sq. miles)

I loved the labyrinth of streets, lanes, and alleys. Shops are closing for the season, and some were offering sales.  It was easy to get totally lost in the maze, but no worries, the sea is not far away.  Restaurants and bakeries appeared at every turn.

Beauty in street!

We found a “secret” secluded café that was just perfect and shared a Greek pastry, bougatsa with cream.  By the time I took a photo, others had found their way there--

I loved this little nook so much

Imagine how fun this village would be at night for younger adults! We could see why Mykonos is internationally recognized as one of Europe’s top party destinations, with beach clubs, superclubs, and bars that stay active day and night.

The iconic windmills of the 1500s using the strong northern winds were historically used to mill grain

The Windmills of Mykonos are whitewashed, cylindrical structures with conical roofs, positioned mainly on a hill above Mykonos Town (Chora). Sixteen remain today, with seven located on the famous hill near Little Venice. Built primarily in the 16th century by Venetian rulers, they were once central to the island’s grain‑milling economy.
A labyrinth of streets!

So pure!

We finished today's walk around Mykonos with another tiropita for me and a cream filled bread of some sort for TK.   We easily found the SeaBus for the boat ride back to the port area to return to the Island Princess. Bravo!!

TK's Takes:  he has some photos and some takes for later-
